After more than a year of reading from a Torah that was loaned to us by a dear friend in New York, it was time for one of our own!

With the help of Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky of Chabad headquarters and Rabbi Yehoshua Rosenfeld of Chabad of Colombia, we received $25k as a substantial donation for the Torah from Mr. Jonathan Guberek, in memory of his grandparents Baruj and Gitel. The Torah scroll was written exclusively in our merit in the holy land of Israel.

The five star Sofitel hotel was chosen to host the special event for Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012. A ten-man musical band was trained exclusively for the event. We had guests from all over: Our main donor, Mr. Jonathan Guberek from Bogota, Colombia; Rabbi Butman’s mother, Mrs. Dvorah Butman; Rabbi Butman’s uncle, Rabbi Yehuda Butman, director of Chabad in Ramat Hasharon, Israel; Levi Moscowitz, Mashie Butman’s brother, LA, CA; directors of the Jewish communities in Bangkok, Thailand; Koh Samui, Thailand; Seoul, S. Korea and HCMC, Vietnam.

Jews came from all over country, including Batambang, Siem Reap, Sihanoukville and Ratanakiri. As a special souvenir, a miniature Torah made in Cambodia was given out to all participants of this monumental event.

במעמד גדול ורב רושם מתוך פאר והדר נחגגה ברוב עם הכנסת ספר התורה הראשון של הקהילה היהודית בקמבודיה. הספר נתרם בהשתדלותו של הרב יהושע בנימין הכהן ראזענפעלד, שליח ראשי למדינת קולומבי', וסיו"ר המל"ח הרב משה יהודא קאטלארסקי ע"י הנדיב מר יונתן גוברק. את האירוע כיבדו בנוכחותם שלוחים מהסביבה: הרב אליעזר אשכנזי, הרב דוד חדד, הרב משה חדד, הרב יוסי גולדברג, בנגקוק, תאילנד; הרב מענדי גולדשמיד, קוסומויי, תאילנד; הרב מנחם הרטמן, הוצ'ימין, ויטנאם; הרב אשר ליצמן, סיאול, דרום קוריאה. נשאו דברים הרב יהודה בוטמן, שליח הרבי ברמת השרון, הת' לוי מאסקאוויץ והתורם מר יונה גוברק. לאירוע נהרו יהודים גם מערים נוספות מכל רחבי קמבודיה. במהלך האירוע חולקה למשתתפים תשורה מיוחדת: ספר תורה מיניאטורי שיוצר בקמבודיה.
